Sandhurst Maps The first recorded reference to Sandhurst occurs in the Exchequer rolls of 1175 and in 1220 there is evidence of a chapel on the site of the present St. Michael's Church. The hamlet may have been associated with the supervision of the Royal Windsor Hunting forest.
In the early 1600's there were 23 houses, but even as late as 1820 there were still only 36 with a population of 220. However, with the opening of the Royal Military College in 1812 and Broadmoor Hospital in 1863 the local population increased rapidly and it has now reached 25,000.
All these changes and the population explosion of the last 50 years can be clearly seen in the large collection of maps we have, the earliest dating from Norden's Map of 1607.
